CREW-St. Louis 2019 Mentoring Program

CREW-St. Louis' mentorship program is one way we strive to fulfill our mission to advance, educate and support women to influence the commercial real estate industry.


CREW will be accepting applications for the 2019 program from February 1 through March 1

As you fill out your mentoring program application as either a mentor or mentee, please know that we do have criteria that we will be following when making our pairings and selections. Among the criteria is completion of your CREWbiz profile. This requirement is in place to assist you with nurturing your own personal brand. CREW Network Foundation provides our chapter with the materials used for this program.  We feel it is important for participants to support the foundation prior to enrolling in the program.

ADVANTAGES OF A MENTORSHIP

Research shows that people who had mentors worked more productively, felt more connected to their peers and industry, and developed more fully than their colleagues who “did it alone.”  Mentorship can help you:

  4. Realize how to accept feedback in important skill areas such as communications, technical abilities, change management and leadership
  5. Improve interpersonal relationship skills

IDENTIFYING A MENTOR

Really think about what it is you’re looking to gain from the mentorship. The more specific you can be the easier it is to identify a potential mentor.

What are you looking for?
 

  1. Specific skill sets (technical knowledge or soft skills)
  2. Career path advice (goal planning or next steps)
  3. Critical thinking skills
  4. A sounding board for ideas
  5. Perspective
  6. An unbiased opinion on issues and opportunities
No matter what type of mentor you seek, it should be someone that you respect and value her opinion.  It should also be someone that you feel comfortable talking to and asking questions; someone that is willing to invest time in helping you grow and someone that will be honest with you and ask difficult questions.  It should be someone that makes you think and reflect, not just someone that gives you a yes or no answer. 
 
Think about how much time and attention you will need from your mentor. Will it be weekly interaction, bi-weekly or monthly? Be prepared to have this discussion with your mentor so that she knows what kind of commitment you are looking for.



DEVELOP A PLAN

One way to start the mentorship process is to think about where you want your career to go. The mentee is responsible for defining professional goals and how the mentor can assist along that path. One way you could do this is by creating a professional development plan. Components of the professional development plan may also include the following:
 
  1. List of goals (think in increments, this makes goals more achievable)
  2. Defined activities to help achieve goals
  3. A timeline for goals and activities
  4. Purpose of the mentor relationship and how it will assist with goals
  5. A meeting schedule for mentor and mentee 
Creating this plan provides a framework for the relationship and helps with clarity and meaning. The mentee is responsible for providing a draft to the mentor and then a final plan is refined through dialogue between the mentor and mentee and must be mutually agreeable. The plan is used by the pair to facilitate the relationship and potential activities.



MEETING WITH YOUR MENTOR

The mentee is responsible for coordinating any meetings and/or conversations with their her mentor. Be clear on what you are looking for in terms of time and what you want to get out of the relationship. Be flexible on setting up a schedule that works for both of you.
