Anyone who drives west on Highway 40 (OK, 64) in the Chesterfield Valley can’t help but notice the immense netting and three-story facility on the north side of the interstate. Yes, TopGolf found a location for its first facility in Missouri.
CREW-St. Louis members got a first-hand look at the golf and entertainment venue. More than 90 members and colleagues attended the program on Sept. 11 to see what packs the parking lot at TopGolf.
Officially opened in early August, TopGolf combines technology, golf, food and beverage, and a healthy dose of entertainment to attract both golf aficionados and fun seekers. The 65,000 square-foot facility features more than 100 climate-controlled hitting bays, full-service restaurant and bars, private event spaces and meeting rooms, and more than 200 high-definition television sets. The St. Louis area’s TopGolf is the 44th location opened by the entertainment company.
Ben Wolski, director of operations at TopGolf, and Rob Kerch, business development manager at Arco Construction, gave attendees an overview of the development.
Wolski joined TopGolf in June 2015 as a food and beverage manager and moved up the ranks and accepted his current position as director of operations for this development in February. Since then, he’s been busy as construction was finishing and hiring some 500 people to help run this entertainment venue. You’ll find an average of 150 workers at TopGolf on any given day, Wolski said.
Wolski noted that the venue itself can accommodate up to 1,500 people, and its event space has room for crowds from 70 to 200 people.
The St. Louis region has more than welcomed TopGolf. The City of Chesterfield and surrounding businesses have embraced the concept. The city and those business expect TopGolf to generate even more development in the area.
Wolski noted that TopGolf draws an average of 3,000 guests on a Saturday. Its opening fell right before the PGA Tournament held at Bellerive. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, during the practice rounds at Bellerive, more than 1,000 guests showed up in a two-hour time frame, with a four-hour wait!
Kerch joined Arco in July 2016 to spearhead its business development. He along with the Arco team have been a valued partner with TopGolf, overseeing construction for several of its developments stretching from California to Texas to Kansas and now St. Louis.
“The networking event at TopGolf was great!” says Lauren Berry with Pace Properties. “The presentation was well put together, and the food was really good as well. It also was interesting to hear about some of the issues or struggles they had during construction, including the extra drainage required with the area’s hillier topography compared to its other locations.”
“It was great to hear firsthand from the builder some of the challenges with this unique facility,” says Erin Valentine with McCarthy Building Companies Inc. “I also appreciated hearing from TopGolf’s management, particularly his experience getting this facility operational in St. Louis. I will definitely be back!”
After the program, several members stayed around to do just that as 49 attendees took their turns in the hitting bays. The two-hour stay and play provided time to network and to enjoy TopGolf’s social competition. The point-scoring golf games use microchipped balls that instantly score themselves, showing players the accuracy and distance of their shots on a TV screen in their hitting bay.
“I had a blast experiencing the golfing bays following the presentation with fellow CREW-St. Louis members, which allowed for additional networking time as well,” Berry adds.
