Erin Torney is a Vice President at Colliers International, focused on retail and investment sales brokerage. Colliers is an international full-service real estate company with an entrepreneurial spirit. Erin graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia Business School in 2007 and moved back to St. Louis. There, she pursued her MBA and then JD from Saint Louis University. Erin practiced real estate law before transitioning to brokerage. She joined Colliers in 2014 and has been an active member of the commercial real estate industry ever since. Erin’s main focus in brokerage is helping property owners sell their investment assets at the best price.
Q: When did you decide to get into the commercial real estate industry? Was it always your focus?
A: I’ve known I wanted to be part of the CRE industry for a long time, but I wasn’t sure in what capacity exactly. My family owns an apartment complex in Ballwin, and I started working there after college doing the leasing/accounting/whatever they needed. I learned a lot, but knew it wasn’t my long-term plan. I went to law school with the intent of practicing real estate law after graduation – which I did for several years. However, after some time as a real estate lawyer, I found brokerage to be a better fit.
Q: What are some of the things you love about your job?
A: First, the people – other brokers in the business, other CRE professionals in the community and my clients. I love that I get to spend so much time up and away from my desk, collaborating with others and helping people solve problems. Second, the challenge – every deal I’ve done is so different and I’ve learned something from each one of them. I’m constantly learning about the industry and myself as I strive to become an expert in my field.
Q: What is your CREW-St. Louis origin? When did you join? Why did you become a member?
A: I joined CREW in late 2014 when I accepted a brokerage position at Colliers. I was actively looking for industry groups to join and was intrigued by an organization whose sole purpose was to promote women in commercial real estate . . . I thought, that’s exactly what I want to be part of!
Q: What was the first CREW-St. Louis event you attended and what were your impressions?
A: One of the first events I attended was the annual CREW-St. Louis awards ceremony. My first impression was the passion that members had for their jobs and this organization. There was a sense of community pride and everyone was so welcoming. Though I didn’t know her then, one of my now-great friends (Natasha Das) was honored as New Member of the Year that night! Seeing another new member’s early commitment to the organization and in turn, the organization’s support of her efforts, was exciting. The energy in the room inspired me to get involved quickly.
Q: Please name a few of the projects you’ve been involved in, specifically in the St. Louis area that you are proud of.
A: I’ve sold multiple retail investment properties in St. Louis over the past few years. Specifically, I’ve sold buildings with tenants such as Denny’s, Smoothie King, Walgreens, IHOP and more. I also got to be part of The Crossings at Richmond Heights, a new mixed-use development at the corner of Hanley Road and Highway 40/64. I worked with Summit Development to lease the inline space and restaurant parcels out front (one more restaurant pad available!)
Q: What other associations or volunteer activities are you involved with?
Currently I’m involved in two other professional organizations. With the St. Louis Association of Realtors (SLAR), I serve on the commercial board helping to enhance economic development in the St. Louis region and foster member professionalism. I also serve on the board of CCIM, where I help promote the local chapter and benefits of obtaining the CCIM designation. Finally, I’m a part of the Young Friends of the Botanical Garden, where my husband and I are regular supporters at events like Fest-of-Ale, the Tulip Trot and its Trivia Night.
Q: What else would you like your fellow CREW-St. Louis members to know about you?
A: I live in Glendale with my amazing husband Mike and our ever-energetic lab, Tucker. We’re incredibly thrilled to welcome our first child (a boy!) this January. I love the show Dateline, everything by Billy Joel and a perfectly cooked steak dinner. If I wasn’t a CRE broker, I would either be a professional dog trainer or a meteorologist (I find inclement weather exciting)!
