CREW-St. Louis Young Professionals: Salary Negotiation Lunch Panel
With annual reviews right around the corner, the CREW-St. Louis Young Professionals Committee thought it would be a great idea to get some inside input from professionals who deal with the topic of salary negotiations on a regular basis. We were joined by guest speakers, Katie Flaschar with Cushman and Wakefield, Carrie Hermeling with Husch Blackwell and Sarah Luem with Capes Sokol.
With Katie’s extensive experience in Human Resources and Carrie and Sarah’s knowledge from a legal standpoint, they were able to give some guidance on how to approach the topic with your company, strategies, best practices and even what not to do in this situation. As everyone knows, discussing a salary and why you might deserve a raise can be uncomfortable at times, but they provided some great tips and advice on how to go into this discussion with confidence during your next annual review. It was a very engaged group of young ladies who attended which made for a very collaborative discussion.
One tip that the group received was to always lead the conversation with your ask or answer and then have the appropriate discussion points ready to back up why you asked for what you did. In addition to that, don’t always assume that the person you report to knows the details of what you have done prior to a review. Come prepared with highlights from your previous years for more ammunition as to why you deserve the raise you are asking for. If you are looking for a good book recommendation that touches on tough conversations, the speakers suggested Dare To Lead by Brene Brown.
The Young Professionals Committee would like to give a big thank you to Husch Blackwell for hosting the event. Lunch was provided by Teatopia which is a local St. Louis restaurant located at 2606 Cherokee Street.
