Women make up 47 percent of today’s workforce, a fact provided to the audience during the CREW-St. Louis Diversity event on April 9. “Each and every one of us has a role in supporting one another,” said Nancy Schnoebelen Imbs, founder and president of Polished, who led the program. “Leadership begins in all of us.”
Celebrating Women and Diversity in the Workforce explored the strides being made every day for women and in diversity, while also looking at the disadvantages that still need to be overcome.
An empowering leadership and professional development consultant, author and regular contributor to CBS-affiliate KMOV, Great Day St. Louis, and KMOX and KTRS radio, Schnoebelen Imbs addressed trends in the workforce. Most importantly, she provided insights on how to change your path and make an impact at your company. “We have to be more of a risk taker,” she said. “It’s up to each one of us to change. It starts with us.”
Vicki Dolan with Gershman Commercial Real Estate, found the diversity discussion enlightening. “While listening to Nancy’s presentation, it made me think of all of the goals we strive for as CREW members. We are here to have each other’s backs. We help each other to become more self-aware of our gifts, talents and opportunities for success. And we encourage each other to take our place at the table,” Dolan says. “In a world in which pay disparity for females still exists, we need to keep pushing on to narrow and ultimately eliminate the gap. We have made good progress but there is still work to do.”
For Shelly Clark with Cardinal Surveying, this was her first CREW-St. Louis event and she was encouraged by the people she met and the information she received during the discussion. “I was encouraged by the networking happening in the room, the strong female businesswomen at my table and the information provided by our speaker,” Clark says. “I am, as Maya Angelou puts it, a phenomenal woman and I'm very thankful that I was reminded of that. I'm looking forward to learning more about CREW and its amazing members.”
Schnoebelen Imbs drove home many principles for the audience to take away to change their own paths. Chief among these: lead with confidence; strike a power pose to build confidence and strength; have the courage to take a seat at the table; and dare to ignite the spark inside yourself.
